Paphos gearing up for Hot Dog show
PAPHOS is gearing up for the 18th Hot Dog show in May which raises funds for an animal welfare charity. Organisers say this year’s event is expected to be bigger and better than ever and aims to raise awareness and money to help thousands of animals each year.
Paphiakos and CCP Animal Welfare are hosting the event which will be held in front of the castle in Kato Paphos and are hoping to attract 6,000-8,000 visitors this year.
The hugely popular event offers a full day’s family entertainment and will take place on Sunday May 3. The gates will be open from 10am to 4pm.
Paphiakos and CCP Animal Welfare advertising and media coordinator, Oana Simion-Bodnaras, told the Cyprus Mail: “This year promises to be huge with so many things going on for parents, children and pets.”
Entertainment will be provided by a number of dance schools and singers, as well as headline act Symbiosis.
Popular entertainer, Matthew Edmondson of Talk of the Town Events (TOTT) will again coordinate the show, along with his team of professional dancers and singers.
He said: “I love doing the hot dog show, it’s such a fun day for everyone and for a good cause. We have three dogs and a cat, and some of them are rescues.”
Edmondson and his family adopted Katy, a three legged Yorkshire terrier from the charity and two years ago entered her into the best disabled dog category, which she won.
The Dog Show is organised into 14 categories and gets underway at 10:15am, with the Open Class.
The following classes, which run until 3pm include, Best Puppy, Best Veteran, Prettiest Bitch, Most Handsome Dog, Disabled Round, Best Cyprus Poodle Dog or Bitch, Best Junior Handler, Best Rescue Bitch, Best Rescue Dog, Best Pedigree Bitch, Best Pedigree Dog and Best Six Legs.
Class winners will go through to the final for a chance to win the coveted ‘Best in Show’ title. Last year’s overall winner was awarded to ‘Luna’, a Cane Corso.
The first entry in the Dog Show is charged €5, and following that entries are €2 a category.
Simion-Bodnaras said: “We are looking for sponsors for the Dog Show categories, so we would appreciate any support for this.”
Volunteers are still required for the event, to help with the set up and take down, entrance cover, arena stewards, various stalls, ‘Name the Puppy’, refreshments, tombola, raffle, table cleaners, tuck shop and floaters.
Help is also needed on Saturday, May 2, for setting up at the harbour
There will be a wide range of food and refreshments, as well as stalls offering all sorts of products and services.
“The Paphiakos team, including the veterinarian, import/export staff, and re-homing and information members, will also be present to answer any questions.”
Activities for children include the ‘Water Walkerz’ and face painting and there will also be a raffle with prizes, including a helicopter ride for two.
Paphiakos and CCP animal welfare is a non-profit animal welfare charity situated in Paphos and founded in 1982. It provides many services including veterinary clinics in Paphos and Polis, a rescue line and a re-homing service. It also actively promotes animal welfare across Cyprus. The shelter provides a home to numerous donkeys, horses, dogs, cats, rabbits, goats and Suzie – a veteran sheep.
Money raised at the event will go towards the upkeep of the shelters’ 1,200 animals, said Simion-Bodnaras. It will also be used to support the services provided, medical bills and the general welfare of the animals.
