A PRIME INVESTMENT
page3image9232
Cyprus’ continual development into a luxury destination and transportation hub, its strategic location and global appeal together with its highly promising future make prime real estate a wise investment choice.

Real Estate has always been a preferred asset class and according to recent Knight Frank statistics, accounts for at least 20% of an investor’s portfolio. The Cyprus luxury property sector was not affected by the recent economic turmoil, and has actually seen quite strong demand. This could be due to a number of reasons including the limited supply of such real estate on the island and Cyprus’ highly promising future following the significant oil and gas find.

Minthis Hills is without doubt one of the most attractive options for discerning clients. The development is at an early stage of its project lifecycle, yet is mature enough to offer peace of mind that an ambitious vision is being per- fectly realised. The development offers excellent capital appreciation opportunity as additional core facilities, including a village, square, luxurious spa and health club, tennis academy and equestrian centre are completed.

Russians & Israeli Tourists give Cyprus a welcome boost - But British Tourist still top the table !

A surge in Russian and Israeli tourists helped ensure visitors to Cyprus rose 1.5 percent in 2014 to help the bailed-out economy buffer three years of recession, official data showed for 2014.
The key tourism industry has pulled itself together after a 2.4 percent decline in 2013.
Last year tourist arrivals totalled 2.44 million compared to 2.40 million the year before, recording an increase of 1.5 percent.
Despite the island’s main tourist market Britain (871,523) dipping 2.2 percent and a 12.7 percent decline from Germany (86,397) arrivals stayed in positive territory.
This was due to a 4.6 percent increase from Russia (636,766) and 57.6 percent spike from Israel (68,822).

In 2014 Britain remained in top spot, followed by Russia, Sweden (106,666) and Greece (100,955) in fourth.
In December alone arrivals increased 3.7 percent to 56,863 from 54,813 in the same month of 2013, statistical service figures showed.
In 2013 there was a 2.4 percent dip in tourist arrivals to the holiday island reaching 2.40 million from 2.46 million in 2012.
Cyprus is benefitting from more direct flights but industry experts say the falling rouble and the demise of national carrier Cyprus Airways could have an impact in 2015.
Improved arrival figures combined with better revenue is fanning hopes that the key sector can pull the economy out of recession in 2015.

Cyprus Electricity now a third cheaper !

THE Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) announced a seven per cent reduction in the price of electricity yesterday, with the price projected to fall further in the near future.
Speaking at a news conference, EAC spokesman Mr Costas Gavrielides said the reduction will effect the January and February 2015 bills.

According to Mr Gavrielides, cumulative reductions in the price of power over the last six months added up to 15 per cent, while the same figure over the last two years approached 30 per cent.
EAC boss Stelios Stylianou said the decrease is owed partly to the drop in international oil prices, but also to the fact that the semi-state power company cut its operating cost by 35 per cent over the last three years.
This decrease came from payroll savings to the tune of 30.6 per cent over the last three years, as well as a 43.5 per cent drop in operating expenses.
The EAC aims to shed 110 more jobs in the next two months, through its running redundancy scheme. Currently, the authority employs 2,100 staff.

Influx of Russian, Israeli tourists saves Cyprus tourism
A surge in Russian and Israeli tourists ensured visitors to Cyprus rose last year, helping its bailed-out economy weather three years of recession, official data released in January 2015 have showed.
The number of people visiting the east Mediterranean island, which is heavily reliant on income generated by tourism, rose 1.5 per cent in 2014 after recoiling 2.4 per cent the previous year.
The figures represent a rare upward trend for the economy of Cyprus, which earlier in January saw its national carrier Cyprus Airways cease flights after nearly seven decades of service.
An increase in tourists arriving from Russia and Israel last year helped offset a decline in the island’s main tourist market from Britain, data from the Statistical Service of Cyprus showed.

In 2014 the number of visitors from Britain was slightly down by 2.2 per cent to 871,523, but tourists from Russia increased 4.6 per cent to 636,766.
Israeli visitors also rose by an amazing 57.6 per cent to 68,822 last year.
Although overall arrivals in 2013 were down, the €2.08 billion they generated was the best for a decade. Revenue figures for 2014 have yet to be released.

Cyprus January Heavy Rain top up Dams

Water board officials were smiling this week after reservoir levels for January swelled to three times the reserves recorded the same time last year.
The biggest reservoir on the island, Kouri Dam, is according to Cyprus Water Board Deputy Director Andreas Manoli, at a maximum occupancy of 115 million cubic metres.

Reserves reached 20% on January 1 before increasing to 27% two weeks later which translates as 27,254,000 tons. News of the dam levels have been welcomed by water board officials of the Famagusta District, which is supplied from Kouri Dam via a south channel.
“Current weather conditions are positive, and we are optimistic the situation will improve significantly,” said Manoli. “Last year rainfall peaked early and started to go down by January, but this year we see exactly the opposite”.
Dam occupancy is currently at 36.5%, compared to a 53% peak last year. Manoli added that there is plenty of time to “make up the difference”.

*** Interview with the New "Anti-Corruption" Paphos Mayor ***

Paphos new Mayor Mr Fedonos is a man in a big hurry with an awesome weight of responsibility on his youthful shoulders.

The Mayor is tasked with cleaning up the scandal-hit municipality and preparing the town for its prestigious spell as the European capital of culture in 2017, just two years away.

The clean-up is both literal and figurative. The Town Hall was bustling with activity when the Cyprus Sunday Mail visited this week in the wake of Fedonos’ election last Sunday. Employees were clearing out desks and cupboards and removing sacks of rubbish.

New Airline called "Blue Air" opens base in Cyprus

After announcing a new operational base in Cyprus, economy airliner Blue Air has confirmed 2,000 bookings for its new flight routes to Athens and Thessaloniki.
During a media conference in Nicosia on Thursday the airliner said that from April this year it will start operating daily flights from Larnaca to Athens and thrice-weekly flights to Thessaloniki.

A New Artificial Divers reef for Cyprus

An artificial reef to be constructed by Larnaca Tourism Development and Promotion Company in the town`s coastal areas will take the form of a famous historic battle.

According to sources, the plans, which are being prepared in cooperation with an expert, will be submitted soon to the agriculture ministry to request funding from the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF).
So far three areas are being eyed for the project: Pyla – Oroklini area, the Kastella area and the area in front of Larnaca airport.
The main criteria for selecting the site will be based on various parameters such as accessibility, water purity and cost, which is estimated to be high since the creation of an artificial reef does not involve only the sinking of an old wreck.
The project should aim to upgrade diving tourism, the company said.
Larnaca already has one of the most famous diving wrecks in the world, the Zenobia, which attracts divers from all over the globe.
Cyprus has many diving sites , see link ; Diving in Cyprus

Ryanair plans to continue with its plans to expand in Cyprus even though the national airline for which it was bidding has been grounded. The Irish airline was shortlisted as a possible bidder for Cyprus Airways in November, but the flag carrier has been closed down because it could not comply with an European Commission demand that it repay €65 million in illegal state aid to its government.

According to Ryanair’s chief marketing officer, Kenny Jacobs, the Irish company plans to press ahead with plans to apply to the Cypriot government for an airline operator’s certificate (AOC), which would open up new markets in the region such as IsraelTurkey and possibly parts of the Middle East.

Cyprus: Palindrome Inscription Found on Ancient Amulet

Archaeologists in Nea Paphos, Cyprus have unearthed a 1,500-year-old amulet depicting a palindrome inscription written in ancient Greek. Palindromes are phrases that are read the same both forward and backwards. On its other side, the amulet features images of the ancient Egyptian god Osiris, a cynocephalus and the god of silence, Harpocrates.

Cyprus says its passport plan is more attractive than Malta’s

Cyprus is insisting that its passport scheme is a better option than Malta’s for non-EU nationals seeking European citizenship.
Cypriot firm, Savva & Associates, is pitching its marketing campaign as the “most attractive scheme in Europe”.
“It is widely considered that the Cyprus citizenship scheme is now the most attractive in Europe, since, unlike the Maltese scheme, it does not require any donation to be made to the government,” the campaign says.
In Malta’s case, a non-EU citizen has to contribute €650,000 towards Maltese coffers to be eligible for a passport.
Also, according to the Cypriots, unlike many other EU countries, including Malta, “Cyprus does not require applicants to live on the island prior or during the application or even after citizenship has been granted”.
