Cyprus is situated in the southeastern Mediterranean Sea and so offers some of the warmest and sandiest beaches in Europe.
As has been the case for decades, Cyprus is split into the Northern Turkish controlled portion and the southern Greek controlled area. While it is possible to visit both, the Greek area is the most common destination and much more tourist friendly.
Though there remains a certain degree of animosity between the Turkish and Greek halves of the island, in practice it is perfectly safe to visit and there has been no violent conflict for over 35 years.
Two of the most popular destinations are Paphos on the southwestern coast and Larnaca on the southeastern coast. Both areas (and in fact the island as a whole) offer the same weather and climate and have the same busy seasons.
Larnaca features a host of amazing historical sites to visit including the Church of Saint Lazarus, the Kamares Aquaduct and the Fort of Larnaca. Due to Cyprus' history of conquest by Macedonians, Romans and Greeks there are many sites and landmarks that offer fascinating glimpses into those great civilizations.
Despite many historical landmarks of its own, Paphos is better known for its nightlife and tourist friendly atmosphere. A holiday destination for much of Europe, Paphos offers all the usual tourist activities you can think of in a variety of hotel, hostel, package and all-inclusive deals.
Parts of Cyprus perhaps suffer from a reputation of being overrun by Brits seeking the cheapest, booziest week in the sun they can find, but this is an unfair stereotype.
Parts of the island, like Agia Napa and to an extent Paphos, do see a lot of nightlife tourists, but the country also offers plenty of beautiful landscapes, immersive history and local cuisine that blends the textures and ingredients of Europe with the spices and traditions of the East. Paphos does have a vibrant nightlife, but it also has the Kato Paphos Archeological Park, Ayios Neophytos Monastery and St Paul's Pillar.
Whilst Cyprus isn't exactly a small island, it is just about small enough to cover most of it by car. This means renting a car is often a good way to discover different parts of the island and explore historical sites in other areas.
However, if you're content to stay in one place for the duration of your holiday, Cyprus offers many great locations where all you need to worry about is whether you should take a swim, have a cocktail or discover something new about the great Mediterranean civilizations from history.
Paphos
Paphos, on the Greek island of Cyprus, is a culture lovers dream. UNESCO have had a field day in this historical hotspot, with ancient tombs, Roman amphitheatres and intricate mosaics joining stunning churches, crumbling ruins and impressive forts…
Larnaca
The Larnaca region is the life and soul of Cyprus, with lively resorts Ayia Napa and Protaras leading the way. If you want a beautifully bold holiday base, with lots going on day and night, Larnaca has the perfect spot for you…
